Travel with family and your personal path- Jana Chan

Jana Chan, warm and cozy in Aussie Caravan on Imperfect Parenting Podcast.

Summer travel and advice on the road

Some of us will be traveling this summer and some just surviving the days with kids around more without school in session or babysitters in town.

This week, Jana checks in as we look ahead at the summer holidays and how we can support all of you in your own travels to family, new places and journeys within.

Jana, again, speaks very openly and honestly about her challenges as she finds herself far from home, away from friends and usual things for herself and so feels the overwhelm and loneliness more strongly.

On the road and your own needs

Whether it’s a short holiday or a long travel journey, as with Jana Chan, life in movement with your family can often mean that your own needs get blurred and pushed off to the side amidst the chaos or daily tasks and management of reality.

If you are anything like me, then, at some point this is going to make you a crazy person. All the places to go. The organizing between. The travel between places and keeping all things, activities and kids/family together and happy. It’s a big job and somehow between it all, we MUST find a space for us. Fitness or otherwise.

Travel with perspective

Stunning.

Travel tends to be madness when with family. The itinerary, the constant re-organizing, finding food, toilets and keeping all people happy. The last one often leaves some or all wanting. I often see moms leaving their own needs in the dust and it breaks my heart. That said, I do the same without realizing it. We just get in the habit and as kids get older we have to lead by example by taking care of ourselves and our own interests along the way before we become bitter, unhappy, grumpy monsters. Oh, we have all seen and heard it in our circles. Even when people hide it, the beast creeps out in unexpected moments! Little comments or frowny faces, or a yearning in their eyes (or our own!).

Jana had more time than expected to reflect on all of this and has already found a path back to her own enjoyment to balance the realities of being on the road.

This year, I challenge you

Spiral of life in one abalone shell .. listen for the inspiring moment when this shell shows up in the podcast

Are you good at creating space for yourself? Do you take time enough for all the things you truly need and love? Then, you can stop reading this section..as you are all sorted! What if this year’s travels could be different?

Travel Mindfulness Practice:

This year during travel time, make space each day for what YOU love and need. 5 minutes or 5 hours, it is up to you. Yet, see the difference in your stress level and joy when the intention is fulfilled!:).

Question for our readers/listeners:

What do you do for yourself each holiday season? Or, how are your holidays when you are just moving, moving? What do you yearn for? Ache for? More stillness? More intuitive exploration? Share with us on email, Facebook group or just record a message:).

A few of our favorite travel things:

Find your favorite book and decide your own favorite thing! Take time to read.

*In coming days before holidays, we will do a bonus blog with our favorite family travel helpers! If not used this summer, then perhaps the next holidays.

Have a beautifully imperfect day.
